The Other Wes Moore- Week of April 24th
Are we really only products of our environments?
My past answer to this question was that we are products of both our environment and our expectations. We are not ONLY products of our environment, it just happens to influence us to a great degree, but it is not definitive of who we become in life. The final determining factor is our choices: whether or not we choose to be products of our environment, go against it or add to it with our own desires and interests for what we want. We constantly jump hurdles in our life and sometimes we will trip and fall, but we should always do our best to keep pushing forward as much as we possibly can. To constantly believe we are only products of our environment can subconsciously hold us back because we think our environment has a restraint on us, and that is just not true. Yes, there are some things in life we may never achieve, but we do not know what we can or cannot achieve if we never try to begin with; if we believe from the start something is not possible we could be missing out on an opportunity to succeed.
I would not say I have a specific mentor, but there are definitely many people in my life that I look up to and aspire to take on their specific attributes to better myself overall. My grandmother, my father, certain friends of mine, idols who have been inspirational to me and so on. I try to be a more out-spoken, independent and charming person, I'd like to be more daring with my interest in the arts. The type of people I look up to have many of these characteristics and are overall very strong people not just for themselves but for the people they care about. I never want to be a person who is too afraid to confront situations or opportunities in life, I want to have the courage to do what makes me happy and not let the risks inhibit me. Especially since I am the oldest amongst my siblings, I want to be someone they can look up too as a strong person that they can be inspired by. I better myself not just for me but for my brother and sister as well, and I find that to be a good balance in the sense of I am not being selfish but I am also not solely living for my younger siblings. I am not just bettering myself but I have a positive influence on the people around me; I am, in a way, giving back to the world and having a value to society too.
